FARMINGTON — For the Nov. 6 general election, more Davis and Weber county voters plan to mail in their votes.
Davis County has received requests for 12,299 absentee ballots, more than double the number the county mailed out in 2008, the last presidential election, Davis County Clerk/Auditor Steve Rawlings said.
And, as the general election draws near, "We'll get more (requests)," Rawlings said.
"We are hoping that we will reach as many as 20,000 absentee ballot requests," Rawlings said.
Having that many requests will reduce the number of voters standing in line on Election Day, said Terry Tremea, Davis County Chief Deputy of Administration in the clerk's office.
Weber County is experiencing similar trends.
So far this year, the county has received 5,127 requests for absentee ballots. The county had 1,102 voters cast absentee ballots in the 2008 presidential election, Weber County Election Director Jennifer Morrell said.
Morrell said she would consider this year's number of requests for absentee ballots a "significant" increase.
Currently, 103,289 registered voters reside in Weber County, she said.
More than 145,000 active registered voters are in Davis County, Tremea said. And the goal of Davis County continues to be to have one-third of its registered voters cast their ballots by mail; another third by early vote; and the remaining third on Election Day, Tremea said.
National trends show that the older, more traditional voter has a greater interest in voting on Election Day.
It is uncertain whether the increased demand for absentee ballots in Davis County this election season will result in more voters casting ballots this year, versus 2008, Tremea said.
"What we are seeing is that those who were generally casting their ballot on Election Day are utilizing one of the other two options (absentee or early vote) to vote," he said.
But certainly, because of growth, the number of registered voters in Davis County is higher this year than in 2008.
