PANAMA CITY — For 90 minutes, Real Salt Lake pressured and pounded the goal to no avail.
It paid off at the final whistle.
With their CONCACAF Champions League hopes teetering on the edge of a cliff, Alvaro Saborio drew a 92nd minute penalty and converted the spot kick to lift Real to a dramatic 1-0 win over Tauro FC on Tuesday night at Estadio Rommel Fernandez.
Real moves to 2-1-0 in Group 2 of the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League, and will face a showdown with Costa Rican champion Herediano on Oct. 23 at Rio Tinto Stadium, with the winner advancing to the knockout stage of the tournament in early 2013.
Salt Lake finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 margin in shots on frame, and spent much of the second half in total control of the match.
The Claret-and-Cobalt created wave after wave of attacking during the second half, but it appeared it would be all for naught as the clock ticked down toward the final whistle, with no goals to show for it.
RSL finished with a 56.8 to 43.2 possession advantage, although the margin was much higher after the opening half-hour. Salt Lake also finished with an 81 percent completion rate on 472 passes.
The only downside of the win for RSL was Saborio's 66th minute yellow card after a foul. It's his second of group stage play, meaning the Costa Rican international will have to sit out that critical final match with Herediano.
RSL returns to Major League Soccer action on Saturday when it hosts Portland at 7 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium.
