Lawsuit filed over American Fork sewer plant’s ’humanure’ piles

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 19 September 2012 | 14.16

AMERICAN FORK — Several Utah County cities and businesses are raising a stink over compost piles made from human waste at a sewage treatment plant, saying it's no way to treat the neighbors.

They filed a $425 million lawsuit against the Timpanogos Special Service District in American Fork seeking relief.

"As the foul odor permeates the surrounding areas, it regularly causes physical illness among residents, workers and visitors," says the complaint in 4th District Court. It was filed earlier this week by American Fork, neighboring Pleasant Grove, the American Fork Chamber of Commerce and businesses including a BMW dealership and an RV park.

Citizens have lodged complaints for years, and the sewer district has responded by trying to keep odors down. By 2010, officials said they were wrapping 160-foot-long sludge piles in Gore-Tex tarps that reportedly eliminated as much as 97 percent of the odor while hastening composting.

The lawsuit, however, says workers who uncover the piles to mix chopped vegetation with human waste are releasing "substantial, obnoxious and foul odors through several miles of surrounding commercial and residential areas."

Utah County commissioners were named in the lawsuit because they oversee the Timpanogos Special Service District.

"I'm sad and disappointed in it, and I think there are other ways to work on it," Commissioner Larry Ellertson told the Daily Herald of Provo. "I think there has been much progress made and continued to be made."

The service district collects sewer waste from about 40,000 households across a wide area of northern Utah County, said Walter Baker, director of the Utah Division of Water Quality.

"They've got a massive concrete pad for their composting operation and water stops to prevent any groundwater contamination," said Baker, listing his agency's only concerns with the operation. "As far as the management of it — the odors of it — that's not under our purview."

The odors are driving down rents in nearby office buildings, the lawsuit says.

"For example, commercial building owners have greater difficulty leasing their spaces, lease rates are lower than they otherwise would be, and tenants have either left or have threatened to leave if the odor continues to plague the area," it said.

The sewer plant reportedly keeps hundreds of tons of sludge onsite for compost, saving money on disposal. In 2010, officials told the Deseret News they earned $375,000 from compost sales, offsetting costs for hauling away remaining sludge.

District Manager Jon Adams didn't return a phone message Wednesday from The Associated Press.

Alex Morgan face of future for U.S. Soccer

NEW YORK — Alex Morgan and her U.S. soccer teammates are on a victory tour after winning the gold medal at the London Olympics. Morgan's late header against Canada propelled the Americans into the gold-medal match, where soccer's version of the Redeem Team edged Japan 2-1 before 80,203 fans at Wembley Stadium in a rematch of the World Cup final. On Wednesday, the U.S. team will play Australia in an exhibition match near Denver.

The 23-year-old Morgan recently participated in a youth soccer clinic in Rochester, N.Y. — hometown of teammate Abby Wambach — that focused on warm-up techniques to help prevent injuries. She walked the runway at Fashion Week in New York, biting her gold medal in a blue and brown vertically striped dress with a bouffant updo while on stage at the Just Dance fashion show. She also made the morning talk show circuit, inked a book deal and rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Sept. 11.

The Cal graduate with a major in political economy and 942,000 followers on Twitter discusses winning gold, returning from a knee injury and what's next without a pro league in the U.S.

————

GOLDEN MOMENT

Morgan says the team is proud to wear the gold medal after "a heartbreaker losing to Japan last year" in the World Cup. The U.S. topped Japan in the rematch in London, and Morgan called it "fate that we met up together in the final in the Olympics. Getting that gold medal, wearing it around our necks, makes it even sweeter." On Sunday in Carson, Calif., Morgan celebrated her 50th international appearance by scoring a team-best 22nd goal of the year in a 2-1 win, also against Australia. She played before more than 100 friends and family, who came from nearby Diamond Bar, where she led her high school team before going on to be the top scorer at Cal.

————

KNEE INJURIES

Morgan tore a knee ligament in high school while making a move without the ball, had surgery and was back on the field after five months of rehab. In high school, she says players typically warm up with the ball and dribbling. Now she's telling younger players about techniques that include balance and core exercises. Morgan says the biggest difference in soccer training is "the agility exercises. We also raise awareness of the importance of aligning the foot, knee and hip." She says it's important for her "to reach out to that teenage group" and share advice.

———

SAFER HEADERS?

Soccer is a contact sport that involves tangling for possession of the ball and launching airborne for headers off corner kicks. Concussion prevention is part of the effort to avoid head injuries. Is it possible to perform a safe header? Morgan thinks so, by "jumping off of both feet and landing on both feet, making sure you protect your head with your body if going up against a header with someone else or a goalkeeper."

————

FACE OF THE FUTURE?

After the victory tour, players such as Hope Solo, Morgan and Wambach won't have the option of playing for a U.S. pro league. The Women's Professional Soccer league folded this year, with no replacement so far. There's talk of upgrading a semipro league in the states or providing 25-30 games per year in an extended residency program for the U.S. national team before the 2015 World Cup. Other options include playing overseas in leagues in Europe or Japan. Meanwhile, the U.S. Soccer Federation is looking for a new coach after Pia Sundhage announced she will return to Sweden to coach the national team. Morgan called Sundhage a "great coach" who taught her about "enjoying the journey and living in the moment — it really made me have fun." Morgan, the heir apparent to high-scoring Wambach, is "hopeful" there will be a new U.S. pro league soon.

Ask Babe: What’s the value of signed 1941 Dodgers ball?

Dear Babe: I have a 1941 Dodgers ball. I understand the Dodgers played the New York Yankees in the World Series that year and lost. Some of the names on the ball are Chuck Dressen, Leo Durocher, Lew Riggs, Curt Davis, Pee Wee Reese, Hugh Casey, Cookie Lavagetto, Dolph Camilli, Dixie Walker, Pete Reiser and Mickey Owen. It's an official Spalding National League baseball with "Ford C. Frick" stamped on it.

-- Joan Keefer, Wurtsboro, N.Y.

Babe: As you noted, the Brooklyn Dodgers were the National League pennant winners in the last season before many major leaguers headed off for military service during World War II. It was their first title in 20 years. They faced off against the Yankees in the first of seven "Subway Series" matchups, featuring the two New York City rivals. The Yankees rolled over the Dodgers in five games to win the title. The Dodgers would win only one of those crosstown matchups -- in 1955.

Durocher was the player/manager of the club, although he appeared in only 18 games. He managed the team from 1939 through 1946, but the '41 pennant was the only time the team finished first.

We've got a pretty wide range when it comes to value. Here's what the experts had to say:

"The 1941 Dodgers ball is worth around $750 in average condition. A near-mint example could sell for $2,000 or more," said Mike Heffner, president of www.Lelands.com.

"Not a very popular signed baseball, but it is definitely scarce. In better than average condition, about $800-$1000," said Mike Gutierrez, consignment director for Heritage Auctions (www.ha.com).

"If it is decent, $300-$500," said David Kohler, president of www.scpauctions.com.

Dear Babe: Years ago I saved some sports cards. Included is a 1954 Yogi Berra card.

-- Ruth Freel, Redding, Calif.

Babe: Not much to go on here. Fortunately, there weren't a lot of manufacturers back then.

It looks like Berra had four cards in 1954 -- Topps (No. 50), Bowman (161), Red Man Chewing Tobacco (AL20) and New York Journal American (41).

Let's work our way up the value scale. Red Man cards had a tab. Fifty tabs could be redeemed for a Red Man big league style cap. That's why it is hard to find cards with the tabs still attached.

Beckett's Almanac of Baseball Cards lists Berra's Red Man card at $100 with the tab and $40 without. The Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards from the editors of Sports Collectors Digest has it at $65 and $45.

Beckett lists the Journal American card at $150.

More than likely you have either his Topps or Bowman card. The guides agree on the values of both cards. The Bowman card books at $175.

Berra's '54 Topps card has a top book value of $300.

Dear Babe: I have a Dale Earnhardt 5000 series 1994 Gold Card Press Pass. I purchased my card from QVC. In addition to Earnhardt, the back mentions Geff (sic) Gordon, Kyle Petty, Mark Martin, Ernie Irvan and Rusty Wallace as being part of the set.

-- Annie Beasley, Greenville, S.C.

Babe: Keeping track of all the items that were packaged for the cable TV shopping shows is no easy task. This one shouldn't be hard to track, since they misspelled Jeff Gordon's first name.

Dan Hitt, senior manager for the Collectibles Data Group at www.beckett.com, said he didn't think these cards had real gold in them. He valued your Earnhardt card at $150, which isn't bad for an item sold on cable TV with a print run of 5,000.

I spotted a similar card on eBay. It was being offered for $99.

Babe Waxpak is written by Bill Wagner. If you have a question for Babe Waxpak, include your full name and hometown, the card number, year and manufacturer or send a photocopy. Please do not send cards. The address is: Babe Waxpak, Box 492397, Redding, CA 96049-2397 or email babewaxpak@charter.net.

Moulton: Sabol leaves indelible mark on NFL and its fans

He may not be the reason you are a National Football League fan, but he's got to be part of the reason why you love it to the extent that you do.

He was for me.

Steve Sabol, co-founder (along with his dad) of NFL Films, romanticized football on television the way writers and play-by-play broadcasters did baseball in print and on the radio.

Growing up, despite baseball being my favorite sport, my favorite sports show was not "This Week in Baseball." It was "This Week in the NFL", with Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier. A weekly, one-hour program that aired Saturday during the season at 7 p.m.

At the time I was too young to stay up and watch Cosell's highlights at halftime of Monday Night Football (roughly 10:30). So my introduction to the NFL was this show. I got to see all the teams in the league and learn all the players.

As I got a little older, the show of choice became HBO's "Inside the NFL." In the early days of ESPN, all the Football Follies, Super Bowl highlight shows and each team's season recap shows made the game so exciting that by high school, no sport had the emotional connection with me that the NFL had.

All of this was produced and conceptualized by the Sabols. Ed and Steve.

Ed took his rightful place in the Hall of Fame last year. Steve should be there, too.

The first voice of NFL Films was John Facenda, a baritone that could read the phone book with soothing authority. Steve Sabol once joked, "If God has a voice, I imagine he sounds an awful lot like John Facenda." Steve won 40 Emmys and helped revolutionize sports on television.

Nearly 50 years ago the combination of his words, Facenda's voice, the showing of the game, all accentuated by music from a symphony orchestra, grabbed hold of millions of us.

And we have not let go since.

With the violins playing at first slowly only to have the trumpets build to a fever pitch, in 1974 "the Voice of God" read this:

The Autumn wind is a pirate

Blistering in from sea

With a rollicking song he sweeps along

Swaggering boisterously.

His face is weatherbeaten

He wears a hooded sash

With a silver hat about his head

And a bristling black mustache.

He growls as he storms the country

A villain big and bold

And the trees all shake and quiver and quake

As he robs them of their gold.

The Autumn wind is a Raider

Pillaging just for fun

He'll knock you 'round and upside down

And laugh when he's conquered and won.

Steve Sabol wrote those words.

And no one will ever do it as well as him again.

It's a strange sadness many of us felt when we heard the news of his passing. I felt this way when former U.S. Olympic hockey coach Herb Brooks died in a car accident n 2003.

Most of us never met him yet felt as if we knew him. More than that, he contributed to a part of our lives that we hold dear.

So here's a toast to Steve Sabol.

Thanks for making the NFL more than a game.

You made it a passion.

Still time to get back into NASCAR title hunt

It doesn't take long for the pretenders to be separated from the contenders in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Sometimes, through bad luck or mediocre performance, a driver leaves the Chase opener sentenced to an also-ran status for the remainder of the season. This season may be an anomaly — the field is too stacked to start crossing names off the list of legitimate title contenders.

That could be good news for Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon, who each had mechanical problems in the Chicago opener. Kenseth had a shock fall off his car, Gordon crashed after his throttle stuck and the two head to Round 2 of the Chase in New Hampshire ranked 11th and 12th in the standings.

"I think even Jeff Gordon, even though he had a disappointing finish, he still can't count himself out," said defending champion Tony Stewart. "Everybody can have a bad race, so it's way too early to predict after one race."

There's usually room for a mulligan in the Chase: Stewart limped to a 25th-place finish last year in Round 3 at Dover and still won the title. Jimmie Johnson overcame not only a 39th-place finish in the 2006 Chase opener, but also a crash at Talladega. An early crash at Texas in 2009 led to a 38th-place finish, and he still won his fourth title. And in 2010, he opened with a 25th-place finish and rallied over the remaining nine weeks for his fifth-straight championship.

So nobody is expecting the champion to have a flawless 10-race run.

"You're probably going to see guys having a little bit of trouble here and there," said Greg Biffle. "I think with this field, people are going to be climbing back in this game because other guys may have trouble or may have a mediocre race and a guy wins. I think there will probably be more guys in it for a longer period of time in this Chase."

Those at the bottom of the standings have no time to waste.

"If those same guys continue to have trouble, that might start eliminating a few," said Biffle, who counts himself among those needing a strong rebound this Sunday at New Hampshire.

He was the points leader at the end of the "regular season" but opened the Chase in fifth after the field was re-seeded based on bonus points. He figured a strong race at Chicago would push him back into the points lead, but he struggled all weekend and had to settle for a 13th-place finish. It cost Biffle another three spots in the standings.

"It was an unfortunate race for us. We felt like we were going to be on the money there and we just ended up off a little bit," he said. "It's a very, very tight points battle going on right now, so we know a couple good finishes and we're going to be right back in the top three in points."

Biffle finished third at New Hampshire in the second Chase race a year ago; he was ninth at the track when NASCAR stopped there in July.

Kenseth, his Roush Fenway Racing teammate, is in a deeper hole. His 18th-place finish Sunday marked the third consecutive year Kenseth opened the Chase with a finish of 10th or worse. And New Hampshire hasn't been all that good to him of late. He was 13th there in July, but has just one top-10 in his last nine starts.

"Loudon has been a place that I've struggled at, but our goal is to get a good clean run on Sunday in order to make up some of our position in the point standings that we lost last weekend at Chicago," Kenseth said.

And then there's Denny Hamlin, who isn't in danger of falling out of title contention just yet. He was disappointed after running out of fuel late at Chicago — his gas man didn't get the tank full on the final stop and it cost Hamlin a top-10 finish.

After opening the Chase as the points leader, Hamlin's 16th-place finish dropped him to fifth in the standings. Only 15 points behind Chicago winner and new points leader Brad Keselowski, Hamlin is confident about his chances.

"This is 1 week of 10. We will win next week," Hamlin tweeted.

Maybe he will. Hamlin might have won at New Hampshire in July if not for late race miscommunication with crew chief Darian Grubb, who changed four tires when Hamlin only wanted two changed. The longer pit stop dropped Hamlin deep in the field, and despite a frantic final push, he finished second to winner Kasey Kahne.

He had a good attitude after the race — "I've been through this long enough now (that) you're going to have plenty more chances in the future, especially the way we're running," he said — and gets a chance to prove it Sunday.

BYU, Boise State mark the start of 12 straight games

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State and Brigham Young have only met twice before, and it's been eight years since the last matchup.

But both teams are about to get to know each other a little better.

When the Cougars visit No. 24 Boise State (1-1) Thursday night, it will mark the first of a dozen games scheduled between the two programs over the next 12 years.

While fans may be enthused about a burgeoning rivalry between two schools just a five-hour drive apart, Bronco coach Chris Petersen takes a ho-hum approach.

Instead, Petersen is looking ahead, saying new rivals await when Boise State joins the Big East next year.

BYU (2-1) is looking for its first-ever win over Boise State. The Broncos knocked off BYU in 2002 and again in 2004.

Mitt doesn't give a whit about moochers

He should have known that off-the-cuff remarks are always dangerous. Sometimes little bits of truth, like so many crumbs, drop into the cuffs -- only to come out later in the wash and cause embarrassment.

In fairness, patrician gentlemen like Romney can't be expected to do their own wash, and he probably wasn't aware of the cuff danger when he spoke unbuttoned to wealthy donors.

Unfortunately, his remarks were recorded and the video was given to Mother Jones magazine, which despite mother in its title is a left-wing publication that some people think -- to use the word "think" in its most exaggerated sense -- despises mothers and is against apple pie, too.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney says in the video. "There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it."

To further show his rich friends that he shares their contempt for ordinary Americans, Romney said that 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax and that his role "is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

Romney now admits his words weren't "elegantly stated."

Well, as someone who is inelegant every day, I was just glad to learn that we the people are we the moochers. I have worked all my life, but I am just as guilty as anyone. Goodness knows I like to think I take personal responsibility, but I realize that my whole life is one of subservience to the government here in the United States of Mooch.

Look at what I did today: I got up and had cereal, no doubt the result of farm subsidies; had some tomato juice with the government-mandated nutrition information; jumped into my car with all its socialist safety equipment, such as air bags; and took government-maintained bridges and roads (not well-maintained, thank goodness, giving me the chance to die as an independent citizen in a bridge collapse) all the way here to the word factory.

And what did I find? A workplace maintained according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, leaving me with no chance to breathe asbestos. At lunch I had some chicken, also subject to government oversight that deprives me of the fun of contracting a bacterial disease.

Is this the life of a free man?

Of course not. It would be much better if I rode a horse to work, perhaps a polo pony from the Romney stable, one that came with one of those dandy mallets ideal for hitting the heads of passing ingrates -- you know, the people who think they are entitled to eat and have health care just because America is one of the richest nations on Earth.

How brave of Mitt Romney to come out and say this, albeit in private. This is leadership. I look forward to the day when I retire and can sit freely in front of my very own hovel, earned with the sweat of my own sentence construction, and fan myself with a Medicare voucher given to me by that nice young man, Mr. Ryan -- that being all the voucher will be good for.

It was thoughtful of Romney to be so forthright about his views on his fellow Americans. All the embarrassing phrases that Barack Obama has said -- "cling to guns and religion," "spread the wealth around," "you didn't build that" -- had to be creatively embroidered or taken out of context to make political hay.

Not with His Royal Mittship's pronouncements. They are the stuff of immediate campaign slogans: "I'm OK and I Won't Worry About You," "Get a Job or Get a Trust Fund," "Not a Bar of Government Soap for America's Great Unwashed," "Blame Yourself, Victim."

Still, some of Romney's supporters may worry that showing disrespect to 47 percent of the American people is not the best recipe for victory in November. Not to worry. While journalists are not good at numbers, I know he can win over the other 73 percent of Americans with his uncompromising views.

As for that cat thrown among the pigeons, it was not previously strapped to the top of the Mittmobile, as the government-loving, victim peasants will claim.

(Contact Reg Henry at: rhenrypost-gazette.com.)

(Distributed by Scripps Howard News Service, www.scrippsnews.com.)

Ever the contrarian, I feel I must say something supportive about Mitt Romney, who has thrown the cat among the pigeons with his off-the-cuff remarks.

Car slams into parked school bus in Roy

ROY — A car crashed into a parked school bus at 3550 West and 5500 South, about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver had been travelling east on 5500 South, near Roy, and the Weber County Sheriff's Office believed the driver was using or was about to use her cellular phone, Lt. John Morrow said.

The car struck the rear driver side of the Weber School District bus, which was empty at the time.

Morrow said buses usually wait in the area for their next route.

An ambulance took the driver to the hospital for head, neck, face and back injuries. The driver was alone in the car and no one else was injured in the crash.

Morrow said at this time, the Sheriff's Office believes that the combination of the use of the cellular phone and the sun caused the accident.

"This just shows the dangers of the combination of the two," Morrow said.

The case is still under investigation and a citation may be issued.

Ex-Yale student arrested for threatening children on ESPN website

LOS ANGELES — A former Yale University student remained jailed on $1 million bail, an amount normally reserved for murder or other crimes that could result in life sentences, after authorities say he made online death threats to children.

Eric Yee, a 21-year-old who recently withdrew from the Ivy League university, posted on ESPN's website that he was watching children and wouldn't mind killing them, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

Yee was taken into custody Monday at his parents' home, which is on a street that overlooks two schools in Santa Clarita, Calif. Several guns were found there.

Sheriff's Lt. Steve Low said Yee was arrested for investigation of making terrorist threats.

Experts said the bail amount was very high for a person suspected of making terrorist threats.

"To put it in perspective, $1 million is the presumptive bail for murder," said Hanni Fakhoury, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and a former federal public defender who is not involved in the case. In comparison, the presumptive bail for making terrorist threats is $50,000 and it would take many specific circumstances to push it much higher, Fakhoury said.

Sheriff's Deputy Josh Dubin told the Los Angeles Times that the department had requested "a bail enhancement because of the totality of the situation," but would not elaborate.

Yee was arrested after the sports network ESPN reported threats were posted in a reader response section to an online story about new Nike sneakers named after LeBron James that cost $270 a pair. Some of the nearly 3,000 reader comments on the story talked about children possibly getting killed over the expensive sneakers, said ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys.

The post that led police to Yee referred to a shooting that would be like the one in Aurora, Colo., where 12 people were killed and 58 others were injured in July, authorities said.

"What he was posting had nothing to do with sports," Soltys said. "We closely monitor the message boards and anytime we get a threat, we're alerting law enforcement officials."

An employee at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., notified local police the same day and they linked the comments to the home of Yee's parents. Sheriff's investigators watched the home until they got a search warrant.

Yee and his family could not be reached for comment. A call to a phone number for him went to voicemail.

Both schools near the home were open Tuesday, although at least three children didn't attend class after they were notified by the school about the arrest, said Dianne Saunders, principal of Santa Clarita Elementary School.

Authorities didn't disclose how serious the threat was, but they were looking to see if the suspect had made similar posts on the Internet. Low also said investigators were trying to determine if anybody else might be involved.

"We take all these kinds of threats serious, especially with the climate of other shootings around the nation over the past year," Low said.

Sheriff's investigators were working with Bristol police and police at Yale University, which said Yee was a student until he withdrew this May for undisclosed reasons. Yale officials said he had been expected to graduate with a bachelor's degree in economics this past spring.

A Yale website listed him as a member of its class of 2012 and a participant in a leadership training program.

Police Taser UVU student who disrupted play

OREM — When Utah Valley University put on a play Monday night, the most dramatic action came from an audience member.

Police say a UVU student was arrested after disrupting the performance, stealing and breaking a prop and running screaming through the audience after officers hit him with a stun gun.

The Daily Herald reports Robert Fletcher grabbed and broke a spear used in the play after he was asked to leave.

Records say police stunned Fletcher with a Taser. Fletcher then ran screaming into the crowd before he ended up backstage, where police arrested him.

Police say he also slammed his head on a patrol car, leaving a dent.

Fletcher was booked into jail on several charges. Court records show he was previously convicted of assaulting a police officer.

Federal court to hear appeal over road suit in Canyonlands National Park

DENVER — The federal 10th Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing an appeal over a disputed highway right of way located in an ecologically sensitive streambed in Canyonlands National Park in southern Utah.

The National Park Service closed the stream to off-road vehicle use in 2005 because of water pollution, crushed vegetation, degraded wildlife habitat and other impacts.

San Juan County and the state of Utah sued the Park Service, arguing that the Park could not close the streambed to four-wheel-drive vehicles because it was a county and state highway.

A trial court ruled that the few travelers who had ventured up the stream before Canyonlands became a national park in 1964 did not convert the creek into a highway under federal law.

2 inmates escape Vernal jail

VERNAL  — Local and state police are searching for two inmates who escaped from Uintah County Jail in eastern Utah.

After Romney watched video, campaign scrambled to respond

COSTA MESA, Calif. - Mitt Romney on Monday was inside the 1960s-era federal building in Los Angeles, in an FBI field office for his first official intelligence briefing as the Republican presidential nominee, when his personal aide, Garrett Jackson, showed him a video.

It was about 4 p.m., and the video was grainy. Romney could hardly see himself in the blurred shot taken from inside one of his private fundraisers, but the voice was clearly his. He knew he had said all those things - about "the 47 percent" who support President Barack Obama, who don't take "personal responsibility." And, after conferring with his advisers, he quickly concluded he had to say something about it.

That decision set off a mad scramble from a typically calm and disciplined campaign staff. While Romney was en route to Costa Mesa, the heart of Orange County, Southern California's Republican stronghold, to hold an evening fundraiser that would raise $4 million, aides scouted for a location to stage a news conference. First they looked outdoors before settling on a room deep inside the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the modern performing arts center where the fundraiser was being held.

At 6:29 p.m. came the urgent dispatch from the "pool" reporter traveling with Romney's entourage: Romney would hold a press availability at 6:45 p.m. Romney's traveling press secretary, Rick Gorka, mandated that journalists not report the fact that he would address the media until the news conference begins.

Many of the other reporters - who, with Romney's public events now over, had been shopping at a nearby mall or out for a run or looking up places to go for dinner - rushed over to the Segerstrom Center. Some wore T-shirts and jeans, others came without their laptops. They were quickly escorted past scores of donors standing around elegantly appointed tables, drinking wine in the arts center's lobby, and into a freight elevator to a room that Romney's staff had commandeered.

A handful of reporters were brought in a few minutes too early, while aides were still assembling four flags (two U.S. and two Californian) and the blue curtain backdrop, and Gorka told the reporters to leave. The journalists waited in a nearby interior room, where the cellphone signal was so spotty that network television producers struggled to coordinate with their production desks in New York and Washington. The news conference was so hastily arranged that there was no time for the networks to arrange to carry it live. They would have to play it old school, by feeding a tape.

A few moments later, at about 7 p.m., Romney, in a dark suit and a blue striped tie, stepped out to the podium. He made a short statement, looking down occasionally. Kevin Madden, his senior most aide traveling with him here, stood behind the dark curtain, looking anxious as he peeked out to watch.

Romney told reporters that he stood by his remarks in the video.

"Well, um, it's not elegantly stated, let me put it that way," he said. "I'm speaking off the cuff in response to a question, and I'm sure I can state it more clearly in a more effective way than I did in a setting like that."

Romney answered just three questions, walking back behind the curtain as reporters shouted more. Over in the arts center's main auditorium, about 1,000 donors were waiting for Romney. He was running an hour behind.

"Governor Romney hates being late," Spencer Zwick, Romney's national finance chairman, told the crowd. "We apologize for the delay. We had a press event that we had not anticipated we would do during the middle of a fundraiser."

And then, at 8 p.m., Romney stepped out to a standing ovation and spoke enthusiastically about his chances on Election Day.

"What a crowd! California gets it! We might just win California!" Romney said, joking about turning the biggest of the blue states red.

Romney marveled at his environs - "I don't know that I've ever performed in an arena like this" - and then proceeded to deliver his standard stump speech. This time, the press pool was in one of the balconies recording every word.

Romney learns no talk is private for politicians in age of video

Mitt Romney's mistake in speaking bluntly at a May fundraiser was not only in the words he spoke but also in failing to anticipate the ears they might reach. An audience that looked like an exclusive group of Republican donors this week multiplied - thanks to the pervasiveness of video technology - to the entire world.

Rapidly changing technology is shrinking traditional zones of privacy faster than most people can adjust, and the future looks no easier to navigate. Some technology companies are creating "wearable devices" that put video cameras in eyewear and watches. Others promote "frictionless sharing" of user locations, reading lists and music choices.

Campaigns desperate to prevent embarrassing video and audio snippets already are confiscating smartphones at closed-door events. But they have largely been overmatched, as time and again moments intended to be kept secret have turned up on the Internet.

"There is a total collapse of the notion of private space," said Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, a top adviser to Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign in 2008. "Increasingly, politicians who say one thing behind closed doors and another to the public get caught doing it."

Researchers studying human interactions with computers find that nearly everybody has accidentally conveyed a message intended for a narrow audience to an uncomfortably broad one - sometimes by doing something as simple as hitting "reply all" on a company-wide e-mail.

Such issues are particularly explosive in the political arena. Campaign operatives seek to warn candidates that they are all but public nearly every second of every day. But experts say humans - no matter how smart, polished or famous - need private space and the more relaxed interactions that allows.

"We all think it's important that we can say things in private that we'd be mortified if they were said in public," said David Weinberger of Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society. "The problem is for politicians, it's very hard to give up on that sort of privacy. It's essential to us."

Psychologist Kelly E. Caine of Clemson University calls the problem "misclosure," a play on the word "disclosure": The utterance is intended, but the audience it reaches isn't. Her research suggests that, in the modern technological era, most everyone commits acts of misclosure - even if the consequences are rarely as severe as they are for politicians.

The pitfalls have been borne out repeatedly on the campaign trail despite aggressive efforts to prevent them.

Romney's apparent dismissiveness toward the nearly half of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes was reminiscent of President Barack Obama's disparaging remarks in 2008 - also taped at a private fundraiser - about some voters fearfully clinging to "guns or religion."

In May, Obama aides placed the phones of 60 wealthy donors into small plastic bags at the New York City townhouse of Blackstone executive Hamilton "Tony" James for Obama's $35,800-per-person reception.

Such tactics have not always worked. In early June, the president, in Beverly Hills on a fundraising trip, met privately with two dozen young Hollywood stars - including Jessica Alba, Dianna Agron of "Glee" and "Avengers" star Jeremy Renner - when Obama was under attack from Republicans who accused him of being more interested in rubbing elbows with Hollywood's glitterati than in tackling the unemployment rate. News of the event broke after the stars began posting photos on their Twitter and Instagram accounts.

In late June, the campaign was burned again when Obama's phone call to top donors from Air Force One was secretly recorded by a participant and leaked to a reporter from the Daily Beast. Although Obama's comments generally matched what he said in public, the story cast the president as "weary and maybe a tad worried" as he "repeatedly begged" for money.

"It takes nothing to set an iPhone or Android on record and put it in your shirt pocket during an event," said Andrew Rasiej, the founder of Personal Democracy Media, which examines the nexus between politics and technology.

Romney also has been burned before. In April, reporters who were not allowed into a fundraiser for the GOP candidate in Palm Beach, Fla., overheard him and his wife, Ann, speaking frankly to donors in the back yard of a private residence.

Romney provided policy details that had gone beyond his public statements, including saying he would eliminate the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Ann Romney, who had been engaged in a debate over the role of women in the workplace, was quoted as calling criticism of her as a stay-at-home mom "an early birthday gift," almost gloating about the dust-up.

Humans evolved as fundamentally social creatures who easily distinguished between public communications - at a village meeting, for example - and private ones between friends and family members. Intimate communication was key to forming and maintaining relationships that were the building blocks of society.

Betrayal of that intimacy, either accidentally or through intentional penetration of private space, is not new. But improving technology has made it easy for unintended audiences to gain access to damaging or embarrassing words and images, as Britain's royal family have been reminded in recent weeks as compromising pictures of Prince Harry and Princess Kate spread on the Internet.

What's striking about the political scandals caused by loose words is how often the wounds are self-inflicted.

Then-Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) famously damaged his reelection campaign in 2006 by calling a Democratic campaign activist wielding a video camera "macaca." Though Allen knew the camera was rolling, he was taken off guard by the furious reaction after the clip reached a broader audience, many of whom concluded that "macaca" was a slur aimed at the activist, who was Indian American.

Author Katherine Losse, who recounted her experiences as an insider at Facebook in "The Boy Kings," said the future of private conversation may depend on each member of discussions agreeing to keep confidence with each other. Public figures, meanwhile, must be perpetually on guard.

"Maybe one of the reasons these things keep happening is people can't do it," Losse said. "It's like our brains can't conceive of a day in which all things are broadcast."

French cartoons add to tensions surrounding anti-Muslim film

PARIS — A French magazine published vulgar caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad on Wednesday, inflaming global tensions over a movie insulting to Islam and prompting France to step up security at embassies.

The move by provocative weekly Charlie Hebdo followed days of violent protests from Asia to Africa against the U.S.-produced film "Innocence of Muslims," and turned France into a potential target, too. Up to now, American government sites have drawn the most ire.

Violence linked to the amateurish movie, which portrays the prophet as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester, has killed at least 30 people in seven countries, including the American ambassador to Libya.

On Wednesday, several hundred lawyers protesting the movie forced their way into an area in Pakistan's capital that houses the U.S. Embassy and other foreign missions. The United States temporarily closed its consulate in an Indonesian city because of similar demonstrations, and hundreds protested the film in Sri Lanka's capital and burned effigies of President Barack Obama.

The French government ordered embassies and schools abroad to close on Friday, the Muslim holy day, as a precautionary measure. It ordered the immediate closure of the French Embassy and the French school in Tunisia, which saw deadly film-related protests at the U.S. Embassy on Friday.

The French Foreign Ministry issued a travel warning Wednesday urging French citizens in the Muslim world to exercise "the greatest vigilance," avoiding public gatherings and "sensitive buildings" such as those representing the West or religious sites.

At the same time, the country — which has western Europe's largest Muslim population — plunged into new debate over the limits to free speech in a modern democracy.

France's prime minister said freedom of expression is guaranteed, but cautioned that it "should be exercised with responsibility and respect."

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warned that Charlie Hebdo could be throwing "oil on the fire," but said it's up to courts to decide whether the magazine went too far.

The magazine's crude cartoons played off the film and ridiculed the violent reaction to it. Riot police took up positions outside the offices of the magazine, which was firebombed last year after it released an edition that mocked radical Islam.

Charlie Hebdo's chief editor, who goes by the name of Charb and has been under police protection for a year, defended the cartoons.

"Muhammad isn't sacred to me," he said in an interview at the weekly's offices, on the northeast edge of Paris amid a cluster of housing projects. "I don't blame Muslims for not laughing at our drawings. I live under French law; I don't live under Quranic law."

Government authorities and Muslim leaders urged calm.

"This is a disgraceful and hateful, useless and stupid provocation," Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Grand Paris Mosque, told The Associated Press. "We are not Pavlov's animals to react at each insult."

A small-circulation weekly, Charlie Hebdo often draws attention for ridiculing sensitivity around the Prophet Muhammad, and an investigation into the firebombing of its offices last year is still open. The magazine posted a statement online saying its website had been hacked.

Abdallah Zekri, president of the Paris-based Anti-Islamophobia Observatory, said his group is considering filing a lawsuit against the magazine.

"People want to create trouble in France," he said. "Charlie Hebdo wants to make money on the backs of Muslims."

Charlie Hebdo was acquitted in 2008 by a Paris appeals court of "publicly abusing a group of people because of their religion" following a complaint by Muslim associations.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said organizers of a demonstration planned for Saturday against "Innocence of Muslims" won't receive police authorization. Paris prosecutors have opened an investigation into an unauthorized protest last Saturday around the U.S. Embassy that drew about 150 people and led to scores of arrests.

The debate about the limits of free expression spread to neighboring Germany, where Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Wednesday, "I call on all those, especially those who rightly invoke the right of freedom of speech, to also act responsibly. The one who now puts more oil on the fire on purpose, with obvious effect, is not the greatest thinker."

Speaking in Berlin, he said the German Embassy in Sudan, which was attacked last week, remains closed and security at the country's embassies in other countries has been beefed up.

In Pakistan, the lawyers who protested in Islamabad shouted anti-U.S. slogans and burned an American flag after they pushed through a gate, gaining access to the diplomatic enclave before police stopped them. They called for the U.S. ambassador to be expelled from the country, and then peacefully dispersed.

Much of the anger over the film, which denigrates Islam's Prophet Muhammad, has been directed at the U.S. government even though the film was privately produced in the United States and American officials have criticized it.

The U.S. Embassy in Indonesia sent a text message to U.S. citizens saying that the consulate in Medan, the country's third-largest city, has been closed temporarily because of demonstrations over the film.

About 300 members of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, a pan-Islamic movement, rallied peacefully on Wednesday in front of the consulate in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province. Later, about 50 Muslim students also protested there. Both groups called on Washington to punish the makers of the film.

On Tuesday, Islamic militants sought to capitalize on anger over the film, saying a suicide bombing that killed 12 people in Afghanistan was revenge for the video and calling for attacks on U.S. diplomats and facilities in North Africa.

Macy's getting makeover to look like Apple store

NEW YORK — A $400 million makeover is giving New York's iconic Macy's store a sleek, new 21st-century style.

And some preservationists aren't happy about it. They see the overhaul of America's biggest department store as scrapping classic Beaux Arts and Art Deco touches in favor of the latest trend in retail design — something like an Apple computer store.

"Macy's has Apple fever," said Theodore Grunewald, a New York preservation activist. "Everyone is jealous of Apple, and thinks the secret to the company's success is this beautiful, elegant minimalist design vocabulary they have. But this is about protection of our heritage."

Macy's reconstruction, to be completed in 2015, will add 100,000 square feet to the 1.1 million square feet of existing retail space. Floor-to-ceiling fabric shrouds areas under renovation. But some sections already have been finished, including the world's largest women's shoe department, which offers 280,000 pairs of shoes — several thousand displayed in white settings.

Macy's spokeswoman Elina Kazan gushes that the store will be a "spectacular place to shop at an iconic New York City destination."

About 20 million shoppers a year visit Ohio-based Macy's flagship store. The building has nine floors of retail space and covers nearly an entire city block, from West 34th Street to West 35th Street, between Seventh Avenue and Broadway.

It is best known as home of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and as the setting that inspired the beloved 1947 Christmas film, "Miracle on 34th Street."

Originally constructed in 1902 in the Beaux Arts style, it was expanded in the 1930s with plenty of Art Deco details. Most noticeable was a jazzy, geometric coating of marble, encasing more than 100 columns that soar to the ceilings.

Grunewald said the columns will now be simplified, losing the marble and the ornamental toppings that give the space "its pizazz."

While Macy's has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, it has not been given landmark designation, allowing its owners to make architectural changes.

"I was stunned they were doing this, making it look like everywhere else in America when they have a little treasure here," said preservationist Christabel Gough of the Society for the Architecture of the City.

Macy's officials said it was premature to compare the renovation to Apple since it is still a work in progress. They said, too, that the plan actually revives some of the building's distinctive features.

Originally, the interior street floor "was one great retail hall, and Macy's asked us to bring it back as one grand space," said Jay Valgora, chief architect for the renovation. "Macy's asked us to bring back the grandeur of the original store, and whenever there's true historic fabric, to restore it."

Also, the original, ornate entrance on 34th Street will return, and some huge old windows that were painted over have been opened again, lighting a new chocolate-and-champagne cafe. Forty-two of the store's original wooden escalators will stay.

Valgora said the old and the new Macy's will "complement each other" in the same light-filled venue.

"I like it — how organized and open it is," said Rosie Pina, a Manhattan schoolteacher. "Change is good."

Brian Williams, a sports club technician from Queens, joked, "I'm a male, and I don't really care how it looks when I'm shopping."

But standing by the jewelry area near some aging, cream-colored pillars and looking over at a gleaming, snow-white new section, he added: "I like the older better — it feels warmer, more at home."

Tot tablets, retro brands are ’hot toys’

NEW YORK — It's still technically summer, but for some it's not too soon to think about what the kiddies will want for the holidays.

Toys R Us has come out with its annual "hot toy" list that includes tablets for kids, fashion dolls in the likeness of boy-band sensation One Direction, and even retro hits like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Furby.

Knowing early what will be popular during the holiday shopping season is crucial to retailers seeking to have the right mix of toys at the right prices. The holiday season can account for about 40 percent of a toy seller's annual profit.

Last year, U.S. retail sales of toys fell 2 percent to $21.18 billion, according to research firm NPD Group.

This year, Toys R Us, is introducing a "hot toy" reservation program. Starting Wednesday, the Wayne, N.J.-based retailer will let customers reserve the 50 toys on its list. The reservation system will run through the end of October. Toys must be reserved in stores and customers have to put down 20 percent of the toys' cost.

The Toys R Us hot toy list has a mix of items that it carries exclusively, as well as toys available everywhere. Toys on the list come from both established companies as well as from some lesser-known toy makers in the U.K. and Australia.

There's no indication yet of a runaway success like 2009's Zhu Zhu Pets stuffed hamsters and last year's Leapfrog LeapPad tablet. But Toys R Us executives are betting that if there is, it is on their list.

"We have an incredibly skilled team of merchants here that track new products and identify toys," said Lisa Harnisch, the company's general merchandising manager.

Here are the top 15 toys on Toys R Us' list. The complete list of 50 can be found at toysrus.com/hottoys.

Space shuttle Endeavour heads west to new mission

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Space shuttle Endeavour began a journey to its new life as a museum piece Wednesday, heading west on the last ferry flight of its kind and leaving behind its NASA home.

Bolted to the top of a jumbo jet, NASA's youngest shuttle departed Kennedy Space Center at sunrise Wednesday on the first leg of its flight to California.

Hundreds of people — astronauts, space center workers, tourists and journalists — gathered at the runway to bid Endeavour farewell following two days of rain delays. Crowds also lined the beaches of Cape Canaveral as the shuttle swooped low overhead in one final show.

Onlookers waved, saluted, applauded and cheered as Endeavour made one last swoop over its old landing strip, and then aimed for the Gulf of Mexico.

"I am feeling a tremendous amount of pride," said astronaut Kay Hire, who flew aboard Endeavour two years ago.

Endeavour will make it as far as Houston on Wednesday. That's home to Mission Control and all the astronauts.

The shuttle is due to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday. In mid-October, it will be transported down city streets to the California Science Center.

If Endeavour couldn't remain anchored at the International Space Station, its main destination in recent years, then the science center is an ideal final stop, said astronaut Gregory Chamitoff. He grew up in California and flew to the space station on Endeavour's final trip to orbit.

This is the last flight for a space shuttle. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy for display. Discovery is already at the Smithsonian Institution, parked at a hangar in Virginia.

Endeavour flew 25 times in space before retiring last year. It logged 123 million miles in orbit and circled Earth more nearly 4,700 times.

Utah ends fiscal year with $85M revenue surplus

SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert says the state ended the fiscal year with a revenue surplus of $85 million in the general and education funds.

He announced the good news in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

After automatic transfers, an extra $46 million in one-time funds will be available to the 2013 state legislature. That includes $11 million for the general fund and $35 million for the education fund.

Herbert says too many Utah residents are still hurting but expressed hope that Utah's economic progress has been steady and is outperforming many other states.

The surplus is a result of higher than expected sales tax collections, liquor profits and corporate and individual income tax collections.

Automatic transfers will be distributed to a Rainy Day Fund, Disaster Recovery Fund and Industrial Assistance Fund.

Man rescued from ledge of Bountiful building

BOUNTIFUL — Police rescued a man Tuesday night from the ledge of a three-story building in Bountiful.

The incident unfolded around 6:30 p.m., Bountiful Police Officer David Suekawa said.

A man climbed up the scaffolding on the side of a building at 108 S. Main St., was on the roof and was yelling, said Suekawa.

Officers using a South Davis Metro Fire Agency ladder truck went up on the roof and talked the man into giving himself up.

He was on the ledge, but it's unclear if he planned to jump, Suekawa said.

He was transported to Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful for a psychiatric evaluation. The incident lasted a little less than an hour.

Sting nets unlicensed contractors in Davis County

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 18 September 2012 | 23.22

FRUIT HEIGHTS — Twenty-one unlicensed contractors have been cited by the state following weeklong sting operations in Davis and Washington counties.

Utah's Department of Commerce and Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing conducted the sting in cooperation with the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies. In addition to Utah's investigation, licensing agencies in Arizona, California, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island and South Carolina conducted stings targeting unlicensed contractors.

During the operation, state Department of Occupational and Professional Licensing investigators set up decoy homes needing repair in St. George and Fruit Heights and then responded to Internet ads by those advertising contracting services for repair and renovation bids on Internet bulletin boards and online classified ads.

Once investigators received bids from respondents, they were cited for unlicensed activity and given information on the process for gaining licensure in Utah. Twelve citations were issued in the St. George sting, and nine were handed out in the Fruit Heights operation.

Some citation examples include:

• An individual with a handyman exemption who showed up at a home to bid a job for $5,453, which exceeded the state's handyman exemption limit of $3,000 total for labor and materials.

• An unlicensed individual advertising as a landscaper, who offered to complete front and rear landscaping, hot tub removal, tree removal, new grass and new sprinkler system within a $10,000 budget.

• An unlicensed individual who gave a bid to tile decks for $1,000 in materials and $1,850 in labor. He also submitted a bid to install wood floors for $9,000 in materials and $3,275 in labor.

"Based on the numerous high-ticket bids received by our decoy homeowners, the public needs to make sure they work with licensed professionals to ensure your rights are protected under state law if the deal goes south," Mark Steinagel, director of the state Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, said in a news release. "Otherwise you may end up paying twice for the same job when the phony contractor fails to deliver."

Francine A. Giani, executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce, said it's important for homeowners to check the licensing of contractors before hiring them.

"When homeowners want something fixed or upgraded, they are quick to compare prices but not quick to check to see if someone is licensed through the state," Giani said in a prepared statement. "Do yourself a favor and take five minutes to check them out at www.dopl.utah.gov where you can verify, online, anytime."

Advice for consumers on choosing a licensed contractor

•Verify that the contractor or business is actively licensed with the state of Utah at www.dopl.utah.gov.

• Always hire a licensed contractor so you have the ability to file a complaint if something goes wrong in the business transaction.

• Get three written estimates to compare.

•Check at least three references with former customers.

• Check with materials suppliers on which contractors/companies they would recommend.

• Require a written contract to protect yourself and your property against liens.

• Don't make a large down payment. Pay as work is completed.

•Monitor the job in progress.

•Don't make the final payment until the job is complete in accordance with the terms of your contract.

• Keep copies of all paperwork related to your job.

Challenges of powering a company into its full potential

Consider for a moment that 90 percent of entrepreneurial training is focused on how to start and grow a successful company from an idea to a full-fledged award winner.

Do you know how you'll scale your business from $1 million to $10 million? Or from $10 million to $100 million?

Powering a growing company into the stratosphere presents an entirely different set of challenges. What, then, are the right strategic steps for a meteoric company to reach full potential?

I recently met with a fast-growing company that was seeking funds and advice. This was their question:

"How do we build a company that can generate $100 million in annual year-end revenues?"

Whether a firm is small or large, the same key drivers of hyper-growth apply. This unusual startup, no more than 5 years old, had achieved double-digit, year-over-year growth. It was adding large clients on a monthly basis. Experienced and dedicated employees were executing with distinction. Word was spreading in the industry that the founder's solution was best in class. Angel investors were happily providing financial fuel to power the flourishing enterprise. Clearly, the company was well positioned to be a top-notch organization.

We decided to work backwards from their goal to learn what they needed to do to achieve $100 million in sales.

The following questions form the foundation of a forward-thinking strategy:

• What is your annual revenue goal five years from now?

• What's the average selling price of the product you sell?

• How many months does it take to sell a product, from the first contact with a customer until you collect payment?

• How many salespeople do you have?

• How many system engineers are working today in the field to install and support your customers?

• How many customers do you need to increase sales by $90 million?

• How many potential targeted clients are there in the world?

• How many new customers can a salesman close in a year?

• How many salespeople do we need to land 360 new clients in five years?

• In a like manner, how many system engineers will you need?

• Will you need growth equity capital from investors?

• Will there be sufficient gross margins to cover all expenses and leave earnings equal to 15 percent of revenues?

• Can expenses be controlled so as not to exceed the budget?

• Lastly, has anyone on the team grown a business this large and this fast?

With a clear road map to exponential growth, we turned our thinking to three fundamental areas: 1) Selecting the right priorities; 2) Deploying the most important resources; and 3) Implementing the most efficient processes.

We arrived at this list of specific priorities:

• All employees should be focused on selling and retaining satisfied clients who will make referrals. Going forward, we want to be known for having a sales culture.

• We will begin hiring great sales people and system engineers.

• Employees will be generously rewarded for their performance.

• Marketing will identify and cultivate every potential client who might be an early adopter of our products.

• Marketing will provide a thoughtful brand to differentiate our unique offering.

• The sales team will have a list of prospects, a quota, the best resources available and a compensation plan to reward excellent performance.

• The system engineer and customer support teams will be in place and properly trained. They will actively support clients to ensure a high level of satisfaction.

• Managers and the new CFO will manage expenses carefully. The budget will be based on our key priorities, resources and processes.

• We will raise money to cover the expenses of growth.

• All managers should feel ownership for his or her assigned area. They should feel empowered and responsible for their performance.

• We will hire an experienced CEO.

• We will also hire an experienced technology officer to guide software development. We need to make sure our products continue to be relevant and best in class.

• We see the need to establish a professional board of directors.

• We agree as a team to report on our progress on a regular basis and to be held accountable for our efforts. We pledge to be persistent in our efforts and to avoid complacency.

The next items for consideration include important and urgent resources, specifically the following:

• Hire the best people for each job. Make sure they clearly understand what's expected of them.

• Ensure there are sufficient funds to achieve the plan.

• Ensure there are supportive systems, tools and equipment.

Each prioritized task should be carefully delineated, documented and taught to appropriate employees. Each process should be implemented, followed and monitored and be examined and improved on a regular basis.

I welcome your thoughts. You can reach me via this column, at @AskAlanEHall, or via my personal website at www.AlanEHall.com.

Man rescued from ledge of building

No gas leak found at Roy school

ROY — Sand Ridge Junior High School students were evacuated Tuesday morning when school administrators had a report of a possible gas leak.

Students and teachers reported smelling gas in part of the building, so the building was cleared.

Gas company officials, the district facilities director and the Roy Fire Department checked the building, found no leaks and gave it the all clear.

Students returned to the building in time for their second period classes.

"The teachers and students did a great job evacuating our building and they were very patient as we took all necessary precautions," said Principal Larry Hadley in a note sent to parents by email.

City must go deeper for new well

CENTERVILLE — The city has to dig deeper than originally planned for a well at Chase Lane and Main Street, and this will increase costs.

The project cost was estimated to be $306,000.

Assistant City Manager Blaine Lutz said it is not known how much the added depth will affect costs.

Right now, the well is 400 feet deep and was planned for 450 feet. However, it could require a depth of around 600 feet. The deeper well is needed because of what has been found — or not found — so far.

"We have not found the aquifer formation that we want yet," Lutz said. "We thought we would have found it by now, based on wells in the area."

Once that is found and the well is complete, Lutz said, residents in the north and south will have a new water source.

The new well will replace the two older ones in the city.

Plans are for the well to be finished in the next two to three months.

Prep volleyball: Darts dominate Titans in under an hour

KAYSVILLE — Everyone knows the defending state 5-A champion Darts are loaded.

Syracuse High saw that talent firsthand Tuesday with two-time defending Region 1 champion Davis dominating the suddenly-sputtering Titans 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 in only 59 minutes.

"This was our best match in region play," said Darts senior outside hitter Camille Walker. "We had three consistent sets today. We have been working on talking and communicating more. We worked together better as a team."

The Darts (22-1 overall, 3-0 league) rang up 17 aces with just seven service errors.

"Our whole team served really well and I don't think we've had that many aces in a match," said the 17-year-old Walker. "That's a good ratio to have. We were serving aggressively, which kept them on their toes.

"We work on serving every day in practice. This is the best we've served this season," she said. "Our passing was a lot better. We put a lot of balls away and we were being aggressive. We like three-set sweeps."

Walker, who has verbally committed to BYU, had eight kills, one block assist, four digs and five aces. Weber State commit Tanisha Langston had four kills, one solo block, four digs and one ace; Idaho State commit Marissa Todd had four kills, one assist, six digs and four aces; Jessica Richardson had two kills and one dig; setter Kendall Sargent had 12 assists, one dig and four aces; and setter Jamie Selleneit had five assists, one dig and three aces for Davis.

"At the start of the season and coming from different club teams, it was difficult coming together as a team," Walker said. "We're more confident on the floor now, knowing where each other is going to be.

"I'm more comfortable being outside this year — I liked playing setter a year ago to help the team — where I don't doubt myself playing that position," she said.

The Titans' Kara Mudrow had 11 kills and one block; Maggie Hansen had 10 kills; Hanna Anderson had four kills and four blocks; and Maddi Bitton had four kills for Syracuse (13-9, 0-3).

"Winning region again is our immediate goal, but it's one match at a time," Walker said. "We can't look too far ahead over what needs to be done now. We know we're a target and everybody wants to beat the defending state champion. We're a new team with new talent."

• layton def. NORTHRIDGE 25-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-13: At Layton High, the Lancers' Eliza Katoa, a Utah commit, had 21 kills, two blocks and one ace; Rylee Cate had 15 kills, five digs and five assists; and setter Mckell Moss had 55 assists for Layton (13-8, 3-0).

The Knights' Kaitlin Verbitski had 16 kills, eight digs and two aces; setter Aimee Kyed had 33 assists, two kills, six blocks and four digs; and libero Nikki Hansen had 24 digs for Northridge (9-12, 1-2).

• fremont def. weber 25-22, 25-16, 25-16: At Plain City, the Silver Wolves' Rachel Nish had 10 kills; Brooke Lamb had nine kills, six digs and two aces; Jessica Snarr had five kills; setter McKenzie Burrows had 32 assists, two kills and one ace; and libero Sariah Pelaez had 13 digs, two kills and one ace for Fremont (11-9, 2-1).

The Warriors' Chase Doughty had nine kills; Morgan Bischoff had six kills and four digs; setter Alex Jung had 25 assists and two aces; setter Maren Ulrich had 26 assists and four digs; and libero Hanna Buswell had 10 digs for Weber (13-9, 0-3).
