Deaths down at Grand Canyon

Written By Unknown on Senin, 17 September 2012 | 05.26

PHOENIX — As the summer season wraps up, deaths are down at Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona in 2012, with officials reporting that eight people have died at the park so far this year.

That compares to 21 fatalities last year, the highest number in a decade. The 10-year average from 2002 to 2011 is 13 deaths.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/SC2x2v) says most Grand Canyon deaths are accidental, including falls, drownings and heatstroke. Suicides are recorded every year.

Dr. Tom Myers worked full time at the Grand Canyon Clinic for 22 years and is co-author of a book that looked at almost 700 deaths at the natural wonder.

Ninety percent of the deaths result from people "who overestimate their own ability and underestimate the Canyon," Myers said.

He said these victims "are ignorant by choice," paying no attention to warnings about the difficulties of hiking the Canyon and the dangers of getting too close to the edge.

"Desert canyoneering is brutal," Myers said. "It's not like jogging on the beach in San Diego."

He added that the "safety net" at the Canyon is "tighter than ever," but that doesn't stop people from getting into jams.

Park officials said that in 2010 and 2011, the number of search-and-rescue operations was about the same — close to 300 — and emergency personnel responded more than 1,200 times both years.

A 24-year-old tourist from France recently defied the odds by surviving a 200-foot fall from the Grandview Trail located east of Grand Canyon Village.

Florent Borrel was visiting the Canyon on Labor Day when he dropped a lens cap. He went to retrieve it, realized he couldn't and had turned around when the rock gave way and he fell.

Five hours later, he was at Flagstaff Medical Center suffering from a broken arm and wrist, a broken ankle and a sprained ankle.

Staci Whitman, a physical therapist at the hospital, said the injuries were minimal for the distance Borrel fell.

"My fall, what, 200 feet? I have just my ankle broken, my wrist broken. It's nothing," Borrel said. "My head is OK, and my neck is OK."

Whitman said Borrel's recovery could take a little time but that he should recover fully.

Borrel's friends and family say they hope to be back in France in a couple weeks.

Utah prison inmate wins $100 in religious rites case

SALT LAKE CITY — A federal judge has ruled in favor of a former Utah State Prison inmate, saying officials violated his constitutional rights by not allowing him to practice certain rites of his religion.

U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell on Friday awarded $100 to Danny Warner Jr., but denied his request for compensatory and punitive damages, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The judge noted prison officials had already taken steps to clarify policies and accommodate the needs of those practicing the pre-Christian Nordic faith of Odhvegr, also known as Odinism. The religion encourages followers to live a "virtuous existence" based on nine noble virtues, including courage, truth and honor. It's among 25 identified religions followed by Utah inmates.

Campbell praised Warner, who represented himself, for "the zealous defense of his rights and for the exemplary manner" in which he litigated his claims. Most inmate lawsuits are dismissed.

In a complaint filed in 2008, Warner alleged prison officials interfered with his ability to practice his religion and failed to make the same accommodations it provides inmates of other faiths. He said he was not given fast-boxes during the religion's Winter Nights holiday and was not allowed to receive a "religious book" from National Vanguard Press.

Odinists engage in daylight fasts during the Winter Nights period. Corrections officials said inmates must request the meal boxes 45 days prior to the day needed, and Warner failed to do so.

Warner had been serving a sentence in Utah on theft, identity fraud and attempted aggravated assault charges. In March, he was moved to an Arizona prison, where he's serving a 63-month sentence on a firearm possession charge. Once he completes that sentence, he's expected to be returned to the Utah State Prison to finish his other sentence.

Police say 52-year-old James George died Saturday as a result of injuries suffered in the Thursday night shooting.

Occupy movement in disarray as 1-year anniversary marked

NEW YORK — Occupy Wall Street began to disintegrate in rapid fashion last winter, when the weekly meetings in New York City devolved into a spectacle of fistfights and vicious arguments.

Punches were thrown and objects were hurled at moderators' heads. Protesters accused each other of being patriarchal and racist and domineering. Nobody could agree on anything and nobody was in charge. The moderators went on strike and refused to show up, followed in quick succession by the people who kept meeting minutes. And then the meetings stopped altogether.

In the city where the movement was born, Occupy was falling apart.

"We weren't talking about real things at that point," says Pete Dutro, a tattoo artist who used to manage Occupy's finances but became disillusioned by the infighting and walked away months ago. "We were talking about each other."

The trouble with Occupy Wall Street, a year after it bloomed in a granite park in lower Manhattan and spread across the globe, is that nobody really knows what it is anymore. To say whether Occupy was a success or a failure depends on how you define it.

Occupy is a network. Occupy is a metaphor. Occupy is still alive. Occupy is dead. Occupy is the spirit of revolution, a lost cause, a dream deferred.

"I would say that Occupy today is a brand that represents movements for social and economic justice," says Jason Amadi, a 28-year-old protester who now lives in Philadelphia. "And that many people are using this brand for the quest of bettering this world."

On Monday, protesters will converge near the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate Occupy's anniversary, marking the day they began camping out in Zuccotti Park. Marches and rallies in more than 30 cities around the world will commemorate the day.

About 300 people observing the anniversary marched Saturday. At least a dozen were arrested, mostly on charges of disorderly conduct, police said.

But the movement is now a shadow of its mighty infancy, when a group of young people harnessed the power of a disillusioned nation and took to the streets chanting about corporate greed and inequality.

Back then it was a rallying cry, a force to be reckoned with. But as the encampments were broken up and protesters lost a gathering place, Occupy in turn lost its ability to organize.

The movement had grown too large too quickly. Without leaders or specific demands, what started as a protest against income inequality turned into an amorphous protest against everything wrong with the world.

"We were there to occupy Wall Street," Dutro says. "Not to talk about every social ill that we have."

The community that took shape in Zuccotti Park still exists, albeit in a far less cohesive form. Occupiers mostly keep in touch online through a smattering of websites and social networks. There are occasional conference calls and Occupy-affiliated newsletters. Meetings are generally only convened to organize around specific events, like the much-hyped May Day event that ultimately fizzled last spring.

The movement's remaining $85,000 in assets were frozen, though fundraising continues.

"The meetings kind of collapsed under their own weight," explains Marisa Holmes, a 26-year-old protester among the core organizers who helped Occupy rise up last fall. "They became overly concerned with financial decisions. They became bureaucratic."

In other words, they became a combustible microcosm of the society that Occupiers had decided to abandon — a new, equally flawed society with its own set of miniature hierarchies and toxic relationships. Even before the ouster at Zuccotti Park, the movement had been plagued with noise and sanitary problems, an inability to make decisions and a widening rift between the park's full-time residents and the movement's power players, most of whom no longer lived in the park.

"We've always said that we want a new society," Holmes says. "We're not asking anything of Wall Street. We don't expect anything in return."

Occupy organizers in other U.S. cities have also scattered to the winds in recent months. In Oakland, a metal fence surrounds the City Hall lawn that was the hub of protesters' infamous tear-gassed, riotous clashes with police. The encampment is gone, as are the thousands who ventured west to help repeatedly shut down one of the nation's largest ports.

"I don't think Occupy itself has an enormous future," says Dr. Mark Naison, a professor at Fordham University in New York City. "I think that movements energized by Occupy have an enormous future."

Across the nation, there have been protests organized in the name of ending foreclosure, racial inequality, stop and frisk, debt: You name it, Occupy has claimed it. Occupy the Bronx. Occupy the Department of Education. Occupy the Hood. Occupy the Hamptons.

Protesters opposing everything from liquor sales in Whiteclay, Neb., to illegal immigration in Birmingham, Ala., have used Occupy as a weapon to fight for their own causes. In Russia, opposition activists protesting President Vladimir Putin's re-election to a third term have held a series of Occupy-style protests. Young "indignados" in Spain are joining unions and public servants to rally against higher taxes and cuts to public education and health care.

"All around the world, that youthful spirit of revolt is alive and well," says Kalle Lasn, co-founder of Adbusters, the Canadian magazine that helped ignite the movement.

In New York, groups of friends who call themselves "affinity groups" still gather at each other's apartments for dinner to talk about the future of Occupy. A few weeks ago, about 50 Occupiers gathered in a basement near Union Square to plan the anniversary.

There were the usual flare-ups, with people speaking out of order and heckling the moderators. The group could not agree on whether to allow a journalist to take photographs. An older man hijacked the meeting for nearly 15 minutes with a long-winded rant about the NYPD's stop-and-frisk tactics.

A document called "The Community Agreement of Occupy Wall Street" was distributed that, among other outdated encampment-era rules, exhorted Occupiers not to touch each other's personal belongings and laid out rules about sleeping arrangements.

It is this sort of inward-facing thinking — the focus on Occupiers, not the world they're trying to remake — that saddens ex-protesters like Dutro, who wanted to stay focused on taking down Wall Street.

Hanging in the entryway to his Brooklyn apartment, like a relic of the past, is the first poster he ever brought down to Zuccotti Park. In black and gold lettering, painted on a piece of cardboard, the sign says: "Nobody got rich on their own. Wall St. thinks U-R-A-SUCKER."

He keeps it there as a reminder of what Occupy is really fighting for. Because despite his many frustrations, Dutro hasn't been able to stamp the Occupy anger out of his soul. Not yet.

On Sept. 17, he'll be down at Liberty Square again. And he'll be waiting, like the rest of the world, to see what happens next.

"We came into the park and had this really magical experience," he says. "It was a big conversation. It was where we all got to realize: 'I'm not alone."'

2 arrested in chemical spray release at Riverton Walmart

RIVERTON — Two people have been arrested on suspicion of releasing a pepper spray-like substance in a Walmart, prompting an evacuation the store.

Unified Police Department Lt. Justin Hoyal says about 80 people were treated at the scene and three people were sent to local hospitals after the incident late Saturday afternoon in Riverton.

After releasing photos of the 20-year-old suspects, police received a tip Saturday night that they were at a certain location in Herriman.

Jordan Crane of Herriman and Madison Durrant of Riverton were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

Crane was arrested on various charges, including felony counts of terroristic threats, causing a catastrophe, aggravated assault and obstructing justice.

Durrant was booked on a misdemeanor count of assault and a felony count of obstructing justice.

Social studies and foreign language team up in junior highs in Davis County

FARMINGTON — The first round of Davis School District students who graduated from Spanish immersion programs at Eagle Bay Elementary School in Farmington and Sands Springs Elementary in Layton is now leading the way into junior high with a new immersion curriculum at Farmington Junior High and Legacy Junior High in Layton.

Moving the program into junior high school has been a huge undertaking for the district, given that the school day is set up entirely differently in seventh grade.

"We've gone from a 50/50 model in elementary school with a language-speaking teacher half-day to now just two classes that are immersion," said Bonnie Flint, Davis School District world languages supervisor.

Seventh-grade students take physical education, English, keyboarding, band and different levels of math, most of which are not conducive to being taught in a foreign language. The district decided to set up the curriculum for social studies to go along with the language class, which is set up similarly to an English language arts class to prepare them for Advanced Placement Spanish in ninth grade.

Currently, 80 immersion students are in the two junior highs. One big change for them is going from being in the majority with half the population at their elementary schools being immersion students, to being in the minority in junior high.

"It's a totally different ball game, where they are now these tiny little numbers in a huge school," Flint said.

Eventually though, seven junior highs and six high schools in the district will have immersion programs as the students currently enrolled in the district's nine elementary immersion programs move along.

Fairfield Junior High in Kaysville, will be the next to incorporate immersion into its curriculum in 2015, when the French-speaking students at Morgan Elementary, in Kaysville, complete sixth grade.

As the first district in the state to implement an immersion program eight years ago, Davis is now the first to pave the way for junior high immersion programs. The junior highs have been working for several years to get ready, knowing it was coming down the line.

Legacy Junior High Principal Ken Hadlock said preparation began three years ago, when the schools started looking for candidates who met the requirements. He was excited that his school would be involved in the program so early on.

"It's another type of education we don't commonly see in Utah, so it's exciting to forge the way a little bit — but it's also quite a responsibility to take the baton and keep running the program," Hadlock said.

Some have asked Hadlock if the immersion program is taking money away from regular programs at the school, and he said that is not the case.

"We're funded for these students just like the rest of the school, so we haven't taken money away from other education programs, and it does not affect our student-teacher ratio."

Because it is piloting a new program, Davis School District was allowed to put electronic language labs in the immersion junior highs at no charge for a year, Flint said.

Each student gets a headset with a microphone to practice speaking with classmates. This is controlled by the teacher, who sits at the laptop listening to them, and switching the classmates the students talk to. The system also allows the teacher to record students, which significantly reduces testing time.

"Because we are a flagship state (with the immersion program), we have the benefit of having these for our schools, and model how to use them in an immersion junior high," Flint said. "We are also being watched by many other states, so they can implement it in their own schools."

Jo Carmiol, the seventh-grade Spanish-immersion teacher at Farmington Junior High, said her students will receive huge benefits from the new language lab.

"With the lab, they don't have to move around to different groups, because I can pair them up from different corners of the room," Carmiol said. "And they are focused on the task, with no outside noises, and maximizing the time they are actually speaking instead of transitioning."

    Warna bibir kepribadian seorang wanita

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 27 Maret 2012 | 01.03

    Merah klasik : Taylor Swift

Ini tanda: perhatikan aku! Pemakainya ingin jadi pusat perhatian.

    Merah muda terang: Blake Lively

Pemiliknya tak ingin sebuah kisah cinta klasik, tapi sebuah petualangan. Warna hot pink memberitahu satu hal, penggunanya tak takut menjadi seorang yang berbeda.

Ungu gelap/ merah anggur:  Rooney Mara

    Oranye Terang: Kirsten Dunst

Warna bibir kepribadian seorang wanita Jadi, apa warna lipstik favorit Anda?

    Tradisi China Pengantin Hantu
